Quick Answers
- Is there a nonstop flight from Austin to Delhi?
- No. There is no nonstop between AUS and DEL. The usual routing is one stop, through Frankfurt on Lufthansa, London Heathrow on British Airways with Air India or Virgin Atlantic, Amsterdam on KLM, or a US gateway such as Newark or Chicago on Air India or United.
- How long does it take to fly from Austin to Delhi?
- Plan on 19 to 22 hours in total via Frankfurt, London or Amsterdam, including a two to four hour layover. Via Newark it is similar, with a 13 to 14 hour flight on the long leg. The return takes 21 to 25 hours because the transatlantic leg flies into the wind.
- Which airlines fly from Austin to Delhi?
- Lufthansa via Frankfurt, British Airways with Air India or Virgin Atlantic via London, and KLM via Amsterdam sell the route on one ticket. Air India and United cover the Delhi leg from Newark, Chicago and other US gateways. Qatar Airways and Emirates routings require two stops from Austin.
Route Overview
One stop, with a choice of European or US gateways
There is no nonstop between Austin and Delhi, and the distance makes one unlikely for now. The trip is a one-stop itinerary, and Austin's European nonstops give you three good connecting points plus several US options.
As of recent schedules, Lufthansa flies Austin to Frankfurt and continues from Frankfurt to Delhi, which is the most direct single-airline routing. British Airways flies Austin to London Heathrow, where BA, Air India and Virgin Atlantic all fly nonstop to Delhi. KLM flies Austin to Amsterdam and onward to Delhi. Each is sold as one ticket with bags checked through, and the European leg from Austin is an overnight, followed by a daytime or evening flight to India.
The US-gateway options use Air India's and United's nonstops to Delhi from Newark, New York JFK, Chicago, Washington Dulles and San Francisco, with a domestic hop from Austin on United or American. Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai are also popular with Indian-American travellers from Texas, but neither serves Austin directly, so those itineraries go Austin to Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston first and involve two stops.
Journey time and distance
Austin to Delhi is roughly 8,500 miles (about 13,700 km) in a straight line. Via Frankfurt, the trip typically totals 19 to 22 hours: about nine and a half hours overnight to Germany, a two to four hour layover, then around seven and a half to eight hours to Delhi. Via London or Amsterdam the totals are similar. Via Newark, the domestic hop is about three and a half hours and the Air India or United flight to Delhi another 13 to 14 hours, so expect 19 to 23 hours including the connection.
The return runs longer against the wind on the transatlantic leg, so plan on 21 to 25 hours door to door. Delhi departures to Europe tend to leave in the early morning or around midnight, and you usually land in Austin on the evening of the same calendar day.
Leaving from Austin-Bergstrom
All of the European nonstops leave from the Barbara Jordan Terminal, Austin's single main passenger terminal. International check-in is at the east end of the ticketing hall and the long-haul gates are at the far end of the concourse, so leave time for the walk once you are through security. The Frankfurt, Heathrow and Amsterdam departures leave in the late afternoon or evening, when the security lines are at their longest, so three hours before departure is sensible if you are checking bags.
For a Delhi itinerary, check-in agents will ask to see your Indian visa or e-Visa approval before issuing boarding passes, and will confirm your bag tags read DEL. The airport is about 8 km southeast of downtown; CapMetro route 20 serves the terminal, and rideshare from downtown takes 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour.
The connection in Europe
At Frankfurt, Lufthansa's Delhi flight usually leaves from Terminal 1, the same terminal as US arrivals, but you will pass a transit passport check and a security screening between gates; two hours is a comfortable minimum. At Heathrow, Air India and Virgin Atlantic use Terminal 3 while BA's Austin flight may arrive at Terminal 5, so you may need the transfer bus and should allow two and a half hours. Amsterdam Schiphol is a single terminal and the simplest of the three, though the walk between piers is long.
If your itinerary is two separate tickets, you must collect and re-check bags and clear security again. Allow at least three hours in that case and make sure your onward airline will accept you without a return ticket if needed.
Arriving at Indira Gandhi International
All international arrivals in Delhi use Terminal 3, a large modern terminal where the walk from the gate to immigration can take 10 to 15 minutes. Immigration queues vary a lot by hour: the late-night arrival bank, when many flights from Europe, the Gulf and the US land together, is the slowest. E-Visa holders have dedicated counters, and India has been expanding its e-gate programme to more nationalities. Have a printed copy of your e-Visa approval as well as the phone version.
The airport is about 16 km southwest of central New Delhi. Into the city:
- Airport Express Metro (Orange Line): from Terminal 3 to New Delhi railway station in about 20 minutes, with stops at Aerocity, Dhaula Kuan and Shivaji Stadium. Clean, quick and the best choice in daytime traffic. Services pause in the small hours.
- Prepaid taxi counters: inside the arrivals hall, with a fixed fare by zone paid before you leave. 40 to 75 minutes to central Delhi depending on traffic.
- Ride-hailing apps: pick up from the designated zone outside; often cheaper than the prepaid counter and tracked in the app.
- Hotel cars: most mid-range and upscale hotels offer a pickup, which is worth arranging for a night arrival.
When to fly and when to book
October to March is the comfortable season in Delhi, with cool, dry days and chilly nights in December and January; it is also the main tourist season and the time of the biggest festivals, so fares are higher. Diwali, in October or November, is the peak for family travel from the US, with the Austin to Europe nonstops and the India legs both selling out early; the weeks around Christmas and New Year follow close behind. April to June is extremely hot, and July to September is the monsoon, humid and wet but with lower fares.
One seasonal note: Delhi's air quality is at its worst from late October through December, when smog can be severe and occasionally delays morning flights. Travellers with respiratory conditions may prefer February or March. For Diwali and Christmas, book four to six months ahead; for the monsoon months, six to eight weeks is often enough.
Entry requirements
As of recent rules, US passport holders need a visa to enter India, and most tourists use the e-Visa, applied for online in advance through the official Indian government portal and approved by email. Apply at least a week before travel, use only the official site, and carry the printed approval; several look-alike sites charge extra for the same application. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and have two blank pages.
Travellers of Indian origin may qualify for an OCI card instead. Other nationalities should check the Indian embassy's requirements. Customs rules limit the amount of cash and the value of electronics and gold you can bring in without declaring, and satellite phones are prohibited.
Time zones and jet lag
India stays on one time zone all year, five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich. That puts Delhi ten and a half hours ahead of Austin during Central Daylight Time and eleven and a half hours ahead in winter. The half-hour offset catches people out when they set alarms, so double-check your phone updates automatically.
Eastbound, you arrive in Delhi late in the evening or around midnight after two long flights, which conveniently lets you go straight to bed. Westbound is the harder direction; most people need three to five days to feel normal in Austin again.
What travellers on this route get wrong
The most common mistake is leaving the e-Visa to the last few days, or buying it from an unofficial site. The second is arriving during Diwali week without hotel and domestic flight bookings, when everything in India is full. The third is choosing the tightest Heathrow connection without checking that the Austin arrival and the Delhi departure use different terminals.

Travel tips
Apply early via the official e-Visa
Use only the Indian government's official e-Visa portal, apply at least a week before you fly, and print the approval. Look-alike websites charge more for the same application and sometimes deliver nothing.
Airport Express Metro suits daytime arrivals
Delhi traffic can turn a 16 km taxi ride into more than an hour. The Orange Line from Terminal 3 reaches New Delhi station in about 20 minutes and connects to the rest of the metro; it is the fastest way in during the day.
Carry a printed copy of everything
Immigration and some hotels ask for printed visa approvals and booking confirmations, and your phone may be low on charge after a 20-hour trip. A small folder with the e-Visa, hotel address and return ticket saves time.
Book Diwali travel months ahead
Diwali falls in October or November and is the busiest period for US to India travel. Flights from Austin, the India legs, domestic connections and hotels all fill early, so plan a Diwali trip in spring or early summer.
Plan for the smog season
From late October through December, Delhi's air quality can be very poor and early-morning fog occasionally delays flights. Pack a good mask if you are sensitive, and avoid scheduling tight onward connections in the morning.
Mind India's half-hour time offset
India's time zone is offset by half an hour from most of the world, and some travel apps round it badly. Check that your phone has switched automatically on landing before you trust an alarm or a pickup time.

The Airport Express Metro runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi railway station in about 20 minutes and beats road traffic in daytime. Prepaid taxi counters in arrivals set a fixed zone fare, and ride-hailing apps pick up from a marked area outside. Road journeys take 40 to 75 minutes.
Delhi is ten and a half hours ahead of Austin during Central Daylight Time and eleven and a half hours ahead in winter. India uses a single time zone with a half-hour offset and does not change its clocks.
October to March has the most comfortable weather but the highest fares, especially around Diwali and Christmas. Late October to December also brings heavy smog. April to June is very hot and July to September is the monsoon, both cheaper. February and March are often the best balance.
Amsterdam is a single terminal and the simplest. Frankfurt keeps you in Terminal 1 but with a passport check and security between flights. At Heathrow, the Austin arrival on British Airways and the Delhi departure on Air India or Virgin may use different terminals, so allow two and a half hours.
