Route Overview
No nonstop, but several good one-stops
There is no nonstop flight between Denver and Stockholm. SAS does not serve Denver and no US airline flies the pair, so every trip from DEN to ARN involves one connection. The useful part is that Denver's own transatlantic flights give you several hubs to choose from.
As of recent schedules, Lufthansa flies nonstop from Denver to both Frankfurt and Munich, and both hubs have frequent flights to Stockholm Arlanda on Lufthansa or SAS. British Airways flies Denver to London Heathrow, with onward BA flights to Arlanda. Icelandair flies Denver to Reykjavik and on to Stockholm, which is often the shortest total journey because Iceland sits almost on the direct line. Air France connects through Paris and KLM through Amsterdam on some schedules; check that the Denver leg is operating for your dates, since some of these are seasonal.
The alternative is a US hub. SAS flies to Arlanda from Newark, and to its Copenhagen hub from several other US gateways that United or Delta reach from Denver. SAS joined SkyTeam in 2024, so Delta and SAS now sell each other's flights on one ticket.
Flight time and distance
The great-circle distance from Denver to Stockholm is roughly 4,830 miles (about 7,770 km). Total journey time on a good one-stop is typically 12 to 15 hours eastbound. The return takes an hour or two longer because the transatlantic leg flies into the jet stream.
Via Reykjavik, the two legs are about 7 hours and 3 hours. Via Frankfurt or Munich, the Denver leg is around 9.5 to 10 hours and the hop to Stockholm about 2 hours. Via London it is a similar split. US-hub routings add a domestic leg of 3.5 to 4 hours before an overnight transatlantic flight of 7.5 to 8.5 hours.
Leaving from Denver International
DEN has one terminal, the Jeppesen Terminal, with security on the main level and three concourses reached by train or, for Concourse A, a pedestrian bridge. International departures are spread across the concourses by airline, so check your gate rather than assuming. The A Line commuter train runs from Union Station downtown to the terminal in about 37 minutes and is the most predictable way to arrive during afternoon traffic or snow.
Security at Denver is notoriously slow at peak times and the airport has been rebuilding its checkpoints for several years. For an afternoon or evening international departure, arriving two and a half to three hours ahead is sensible. Summer thunderstorms over the Front Range delay afternoon departures often enough that a tight connection at the European hub is a risk worth avoiding.
Arriving at Stockholm Arlanda
Arlanda has several terminals in one connected complex. Terminal 5 handles SAS and most international arrivals on recent assignments, though some airlines have used other terminals. Confirm your terminal the day before. If you connected inside the Schengen Area, you already cleared immigration at Frankfurt, Munich, Paris or Amsterdam and simply walk out at Arlanda. If you came via London or Reykjavik, you clear Swedish passport control on arrival; Iceland is in Schengen, so a Reykjavik connection means you are admitted there.
Arlanda is about 40 km north of Stockholm:
- Arlanda Express: the dedicated train to Stockholm Central in about 18 to 20 minutes, leaving every 10 to 15 minutes. The fastest option and the most expensive.
- Commuter train (pendeltag): slower, about 40 minutes to Stockholm City, and much cheaper, though a station access fee is added at Arlanda.
- Flygbussarna coaches: around 45 minutes to Cityterminalen next to the Central Station, longer in rush hour.
- Taxi: 40 to 50 minutes. Swedish taxis are unregulated on price, so use a major company and agree a fixed airport fare before you leave.
Sweden is close to cashless. Cards and phone payments work everywhere, including on buses, where cash is not accepted at all.
Best time to fly and when to book
Stockholm is a summer city for visitors. From late May to August the days are long, the archipelago boats run, and demand from the US peaks, especially around Midsummer in late June. Fares are highest then and seats on the Denver connections go early. September is a good compromise, with mild weather and quieter streets. December brings Christmas markets and Lucia celebrations, but daylight is short and the cold is real. January to March is the quietest period and the easiest for fares, if you are happy with winter.
For summer travel, book four to six months ahead; for the shoulder seasons, two to three months is usually enough. Check whether your preferred Denver nonstop to Europe is seasonal, because some of them stop in winter and force a US-hub routing instead.
Entry requirements and documents
Sweden is in the Schengen Area. As of recent rules, US passport holders can visit for short tourist stays without a visa, within the 90-days-in-180 Schengen limit. The EU's new Entry/Exit System is being phased in and the ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is planned, so check the Swedish Migration Agency or the official EU travel site before you fly. Your passport should be valid for three months beyond your planned departure from Schengen.
Time difference and jet lag
Stockholm is 8 hours ahead of Denver for most of the year; the gap is 7 or 9 hours for a short period around the spring and autumn clock changes, which fall on different dates in Europe and the US. Eastbound arrivals land in the afternoon or evening after little sleep. Push through to a normal bedtime and the second day is fine. In midsummer the light at midnight makes sleeping harder, so bring an eye mask. Westbound jet lag is gentler but longer-lasting; you will wake early for several days.
What travellers on this route get wrong
The first mistake is assuming a nonstop exists and then settling for a poor routing late in the booking process; start by comparing Frankfurt, Reykjavik and London side by side. The second is a short connection in Frankfurt or Heathrow, where passport control and terminal changes eat an hour. The third is walking out of arrivals and taking the first taxi; agree the fixed fare first or take the train. The fourth is bringing cash, which you will struggle to spend.

Travel tips
Compare three hubs before you book
Reykjavik, Frankfurt and London reach Stockholm at similar total times from Denver. Line up the three for your dates and pick the one with a two-hour connection rather than the cheapest by a small margin.
Pay by card everywhere
Sweden is almost cashless. Buses do not take cash, many cafes refuse it, and you will not need to exchange money. Make sure your card has no foreign transaction fee and that contactless works.
Agree the taxi fare first
Taxi prices in Sweden are not regulated. Use Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir or Sverigetaxi from the airport rank and ask for the fixed airport fare, or take the Arlanda Express instead.
Bring an eye mask in summer
Around Midsummer the sky in Stockholm barely darkens. Hotel blackout curtains vary, and jet lag plus midnight daylight is a bad combination without one.
Watch for seasonal Denver nonstops
Some Denver to Europe flights run only in summer. If your preferred connection disappears for a winter date, route through Frankfurt or Munich, which fly year-round, or through a US hub with SAS.

Reykjavik on Icelandair is often the shortest total journey because Iceland lies close to the direct path. Frankfurt and Munich on Lufthansa are the most frequent and work year-round. Compare total time rather than the length of the first leg.
