Route Overview
Nonstop is the normal way to fly Newark to Frankfurt
Newark to Frankfurt is one of the core transatlantic routes, and as of recent schedules both United and Lufthansa fly it nonstop, typically with several departures a day between them. The two airlines are Star Alliance partners and often sell seats on each other's flights, so the operating carrier may differ from the one on your booking; check it, because it decides your terminal in Newark and your baggage rules.
Most departures leave Newark in the late afternoon or evening and arrive in Frankfurt the next morning, which fits the usual business and onward-connection pattern. There is usually at least one daytime departure that lands in Frankfurt late in the evening.
If you see a one-stop itinerary priced below the nonstops, it is normally via another European hub such as Dublin, Reykjavik, Amsterdam or London, or via a US gateway. It adds three to six hours. Worth it only if the saving is large or the timing suits you better.
Frankfurt is also Lufthansa's main hub, so Newark to Frankfurt is the first leg of thousands of onward journeys to Germany, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. If that is you, the Frankfurt connection notes below matter as much as the flight itself.
Flight time and distance, both directions
The straight-line distance between Newark and Frankfurt is about 3,860 miles (roughly 6,200 km). Eastbound, Newark to Frankfurt typically takes 7 to 8 hours in the air with the jet stream behind you. Westbound, Frankfurt to Newark takes 8.5 to 9.5 hours against the wind, and more in winter when the jet stream is strongest.
Eastbound overnight flights give you a short night: dinner, four or five hours of sleep at best, then breakfast and landing. Westbound flights are daytime and land in Newark in the afternoon or early evening, which is easier on the body.
Leaving from Newark Liberty
Newark has three terminals. United uses Terminal C for almost all its flights, including Frankfurt. Lufthansa uses Terminal B, which handles most foreign carriers. The terminals are linked by the AirTrain, not by airside walkways, so a terminal change means re-clearing security; if you connect from a domestic United flight onto a Lufthansa-operated Frankfurt flight, allow for that.
Security at Terminal C is busiest in the late afternoon, exactly when the Europe flights board. Arriving two and a half to three hours ahead is sensible if you are checking bags, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings in summer.
From Manhattan, the fastest public route is NJ Transit or Amtrak from Penn Station to Newark Liberty Airport station, then the AirTrain to your terminal; the rail part takes around 25 to 30 minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing from Manhattan take 45 minutes to well over an hour in the evening rush.
Arriving at Frankfurt and getting into the city
United and Lufthansa both arrive at Terminal 1, the Star Alliance terminal, which is divided into concourses A, B, C and Z. Non-Schengen arrivals from the US pass through passport control, where US passport holders can usually use the automated gates, then collect bags on the level below. Frankfurt is a large, spread-out airport and walks between concourses can be long, so follow the signs rather than your instinct.
The city is close. The regional station under Terminal 1 has S-Bahn trains, lines S8 and S9, to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in about 12 to 15 minutes and on to the city centre. A separate long-distance station, the Fernbahnhof, is linked to Terminal 1 by a walkway and is where ICE high-speed trains leave for Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich and beyond, which many travellers use instead of a connecting flight. Taxis to the centre take 20 to 30 minutes.
If you are connecting onward by air, Lufthansa builds short connections at Frankfurt, but a Schengen-bound onward flight means passport control between the non-Schengen A or Z gates and the Schengen gates; an hour is tight, ninety minutes is comfortable.
When to fly and when to book
Frankfurt is a business city, so the Newark route is busiest midweek year-round and leisure demand peaks in June, July and August, around the Christmas markets in late November and December, and during the big trade fairs such as the Frankfurt Book Fair in October and the IAA motor show in alternating years, when hotels fill up and fares rise. Oktoberfest in Munich also pushes up demand for Frankfurt as a gateway.
Late January to March is the quietest period and usually the easiest time to find a good fare. Spring and autumn are pleasant, with mild weather and fewer crowds. For summer or Christmas-market travel, booking two to four months ahead is realistic; for the rest of the year, a few weeks is often enough on a route with this much capacity.
Entry requirements
Germany is in the Schengen area. As of recent rules, US passport holders can visit for short stays without a visa, and the EU has been introducing the ETIAS pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers; check the official EU website and the German consulate before you fly. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
If you connect in Frankfurt to a destination outside Schengen, you stay in the non-Schengen part of the terminal and do not formally enter Germany; check the entry rules of your final country instead.
Time zones and jet lag
Frankfurt is 6 hours ahead of Newark for most of the year, since both observe daylight saving time; the gap shifts briefly in the weeks when the US and EU change their clocks on different dates. Eastbound you lose a night and land in the morning. Get outside in daylight, keep moving and avoid a long afternoon nap, and most people are fine by the second day. Westbound you land in the afternoon with a long day behind you; an early night the first evening usually resets you.
What travellers on this route get wrong
The most common mistake is going to the wrong Newark terminal because the ticket says United but the flight is operated by Lufthansa, or vice versa. The second is a short onward connection at Frankfurt that involves passport control and a long walk between concourses. The third is taking a taxi into Frankfurt when the S-Bahn is faster and sitting right under the terminal.

Travel tips
Check carrier, then Newark terminal
A United ticket may be a Lufthansa-operated flight from Terminal B, and a Lufthansa ticket may be United-operated from Terminal C. The Newark terminals are linked only by the AirTrain, so going to the wrong one costs you time at security twice.
Take the train to Newark
NJ Transit or Amtrak from Penn Station to the airport station plus the AirTrain takes about half an hour and ignores the Lincoln Tunnel traffic that can double a taxi ride at departure time.
Use the S-Bahn into Frankfurt
Lines S8 and S9 leave from under Terminal 1 and reach the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 to 15 minutes. Buy a ticket from the machine before boarding; the fare zone for the airport is slightly higher than the inner city.
Consider the ICE over flying
The Fernbahnhof beside Terminal 1 has high-speed trains to Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich and beyond. For many German cities the train is as fast as flying once you count the connection, and Lufthansa sells some of them as rail-and-fly tickets.
Give Frankfurt connections room
The airport is large and a Schengen-bound connection involves passport control. Ninety minutes is comfortable; anything under an hour depends on your inbound flight landing on time and your gate being close.
Sleep strategically on the overnight flight
Eastbound you get four or five hours at most. Eat lightly, skip the late movie and sleep as soon as the cabin dims, then stay in daylight after landing. A short nap after check-in is fine; an afternoon in bed is not.

For an onward flight within the Schengen area, allow at least 90 minutes, because you pass passport control and may walk a long way between concourses. For an onward non-Schengen flight, an hour can work but 90 minutes is safer. Lufthansa will not sell a connection below its published minimum.
