Route Overview
Normally a connection, and the hub choice matters
As of recent schedules there is no regular nonstop between Washington Dulles and Shanghai Pudong. Flights between the United States and China are still limited in number compared with the years before 2020, and the nonstops that do run from Washington go to Beijing on Air China, with a domestic connection on to Shanghai. United's Shanghai flights leave from San Francisco, so a United itinerary from Dulles connects on the West Coast.
The other common routings go through Northeast Asia. ANA and United connect through Tokyo, Japan Airlines and American through Tokyo as well, and Korean Air and Delta through Seoul Incheon, which has a nonstop from Dulles. These Tokyo and Seoul connections are usually the most comfortable: a long first leg followed by a short two to three hour hop to Shanghai. Air Canada through Toronto and Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong also appear, the latter usually with a connection on the US side as well.
Schedules on US to China routes change more often than on other long-haul markets, so confirm the current timetable with the airline close to booking.
Flight time and distance
The straight-line distance between IAD and PVG is roughly 7,400 miles (about 11,900 km). Time in the air is about 15 to 17 hours across the two legs westbound, and the realistic journey including a connection is 18 to 23 hours. Via Beijing the air time is similar but the domestic connection adds its own queueing.
The return is faster in the air, roughly 14 to 15 hours across the legs, with the jet stream behind you on the Pacific crossing. You cross the International Date Line heading west, so you land in Shanghai the day after you leave Washington and can land in Washington the same calendar day you leave Shanghai.
Leaving from Washington Dulles
Dulles has a main terminal with check-in and security, and concourses A, B, C and D reached by the AeroTrain or, for parts of A, a walkway. United uses C and D for most flights; Air China, ANA, Korean Air and other foreign carriers use A or B. If your first leg is a domestic United flight to San Francisco you check in as a domestic passenger; if you fly Air China, ANA or Korean Air out of Dulles you are checking in for an international departure and should allow three hours.
The Silver Line Metro now reaches Dulles directly, with the station a short covered walk from the terminal, and it is the most predictable way to arrive during Northern Virginia's rush hours. Confirm your bag is tagged through to PVG and ask whether you need to collect it at the connecting hub; on a Beijing routing you will usually clear Chinese immigration and customs there, not in Shanghai.
Arriving at Pudong and getting into Shanghai
Pudong has two terminals, 1 and 2, with satellite concourses connected by an automated people mover. Immigration for foreign passport holders includes fingerprinting and can be slow when several long-haul flights land together, so fill in the arrival card carefully and have your hotel address to hand. If you entered China at Beijing, you arrive in Shanghai as a domestic passenger.
The airport is about 30 km east of the city centre:
- Maglev: the magnetic levitation train runs from the airport to Longyang Road station in about eight minutes, where you change to Metro Line 2 or a taxi. Spectacular, but not always the quickest overall.
- Metro Line 2: runs directly from the airport across the city to People's Square and beyond in roughly an hour. Cheap and simple, though crowded with luggage at peak times.
- Airport buses: several routes to major hotel districts, taking 60 to 90 minutes.
- Taxi: 45 to 90 minutes to Puxi depending on traffic. Use the official rank and have your destination written in Chinese.
Mobile payment dominates in Shanghai. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you leave and carry some cash as backup, because many small shops no longer handle cash easily.
When to fly and when to book
China's holiday calendar drives this route. Chinese New Year, falling in late January or February, and the National Day Golden Week in early October are the busiest and most expensive periods, with domestic flights and trains full. The Labour Day holiday in early May is a shorter crunch. Shanghai's summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk from July to September, and winter is cold and grey.
The pleasant seasons are late March to May and October to November, which are also when business travel is heaviest, so fares are not low but the weather rewards you. For travel around the Chinese holidays, book four to six months ahead; otherwise two to three months is usually enough, with the proviso that US to China schedules can change at short notice.
Entry requirements and documents
As of recent rules, US passport holders need a visa to visit China for tourism, obtained in advance from a Chinese visa application centre or consulate. China has also widened its visa-free transit scheme, allowing travellers from the US and many other countries to stay for a limited period when passing through to a third country, and it has rolled out visa-free short visits for some nationalities. These rules have changed several times recently, so check the Chinese embassy's current guidance and the National Immigration Administration before you book. Your passport should be valid for at least six months.
Many US-based apps and websites do not work on Chinese networks without a VPN set up before you arrive. Download offline maps, a translation app and your airline's app before you leave Washington.
Time zones and jet lag
China has one time zone and no daylight saving time. Shanghai is thirteen hours ahead of Washington in winter and twelve hours ahead in summer, almost a complete reversal of day and night. Arriving in the afternoon or evening, as most routings do, helps: eat dinner, sleep and start fresh. Expect three to five days to feel fully adjusted. The return is harder for most people; try to get morning daylight in Washington and avoid long naps.
What travellers on this route get wrong
The most common mistake is turning up without a visa or misreading the transit rules, which the airline will catch at Dulles by refusing boarding. The second is arriving with no working payment method because mobile payment was not set up in advance. The third is assuming Hongqiao, Shanghai's other airport, is interchangeable with Pudong when booking onward domestic flights; they are on opposite sides of the city.

Travel tips
Settle China visa or transit first
A Chinese tourist visa takes time to obtain, and the visa-free transit scheme has conditions on where you arrive from and where you go next. Confirm which applies to you with the Chinese embassy before you buy a ticket.
Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay
Register one of the apps with a foreign card while you still have your normal internet access. Most shops, taxis and Metro gates in Shanghai expect mobile payment, and cash is increasingly awkward.
Download essentials before reaching China
Many US apps and sites do not work on Chinese networks without a VPN configured in advance. Save offline maps, your hotel address in Chinese characters, a translation app and your boarding passes before departure.
Take Metro Line 2 from Pudong
The Metro runs from the airport straight across the city for very little. The Maglev is a thrill but drops you at Longyang Road, where you still need a Metro or taxi to most hotels.
Know your onward Shanghai airport
Pudong handles most international flights, while Hongqiao on the west side of the city handles mostly domestic ones. If you are continuing within China, check the airport code and allow a long transfer between them.
Give the connection plenty of time
At Tokyo, Seoul or San Francisco you may change terminals and go through security again. Two hours is a sensible minimum, and more if your itinerary involves two airlines that are not partners.
