Route Overview

Nonstop, several times a day

New York JFK to Toronto Pearson is a short international hop with plenty of nonstop service. As of recent schedules, Air Canada, American Airlines and Delta all fly it nonstop, between them offering departures spread through the day from early morning to evening. It is a business-heavy route, so weekday mornings and evenings are the busiest.

JFK is not the only New York option, and that matters for price and convenience. LaGuardia has Air Canada and Delta flights to Pearson and is closer to Manhattan for many travellers; Newark has United and Porter, and Porter also flies Newark to Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which sits on an island a short ferry or tunnel walk from downtown Toronto. If your Toronto destination is downtown and you are flexible on the New York airport, the Billy Bishop option can save you the Pearson transfer.

A connecting itinerary on this route almost never makes sense. If you see one, it is usually a fare quirk rather than a real option.

Flight time and distance

JFK to Pearson is roughly 350 miles (about 570 km). Scheduled flying time is about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes gate to gate, with the time in the air closer to an hour. Both directions are about the same; the difference is in taxi time and air-traffic holds, which can be long at JFK in the evening and at Pearson during winter weather.

Because the flight is so short, the ground time dominates the trip. Count on two hours at JFK before departure for international check-in and security, and 30 to 60 minutes at Pearson for immigration and bags. The whole journey, Manhattan to downtown Toronto, is realistically five to six hours.

Leaving from JFK

JFK's terminals are spread around a loop served by the free AirTrain. Delta uses Terminal 4, American uses Terminal 8, and Air Canada's terminal has moved in recent years as the airport rebuilds, so check your boarding pass or the airline's site the day before rather than assuming. The AirTrain also links to the subway at Jamaica and Howard Beach and to the Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica, which is usually the quickest route from Manhattan.

This is an international departure, so you need your passport at check-in and online check-in may ask for it in advance. Security lines at Terminals 4 and 8 are long at peak hours; two hours before departure is the right target.

Flying to Canada, you do not pass any Canadian official at JFK. Immigration and customs happen when you land at Pearson.

Arriving at Pearson and getting into Toronto

Pearson has two terminals. Air Canada and Star Alliance partners use Terminal 1; American, Delta and most other airlines use Terminal 3. The free Terminal Link train runs between them around the clock. On arrival you clear Canadian immigration at primary inspection kiosks, which scan your passport and take a photo; the Advance Declaration in the ArriveCAN app is optional but lets you answer the customs questions before landing and use a faster kiosk line.

Getting downtown:

  • UP Express: the train from Terminal 1 to Union Station runs every quarter hour and takes about 25 minutes. Tap a credit card or PRESTO card to ride.
  • TTC bus: the 900 Airport Express bus to Kipling subway station is the budget option and takes about an hour to downtown with the subway change.
  • Taxi or rideshare: 30 to 60 minutes to downtown depending on traffic on the 427 and Gardiner.

For the return to New York, the order flips: you clear US Customs and Border Protection at Pearson before boarding, in the US preclearance area, and arrive at JFK as if from a domestic flight. Allow at least two hours at Pearson for the return because preclearance has its own queue, and arrive earlier still in the morning rush.

When to fly and when to book

Fares on this route follow the business calendar more than the weather: Monday mornings and Thursday or Friday evenings cost the most, and Saturday departures and midday Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually the cheapest. Summer brings leisure demand and festival weekends, and the Toronto International Film Festival in September fills hotels more than planes. Christmas week and the US Thanksgiving weekend are the tightest holiday periods.

Winter is the operational risk. Lake-effect snow at Pearson and nor'easters at JFK can cancel a full day of flights from December to March, so for a fixed-date event in winter, fly in the day before. Booking three to six weeks ahead is normally enough; last-minute fares spike on weekday business departures.

Documents and entry

You need a passport to fly to Canada. As of recent rules, US citizens do not need a visa or an eTA for a short visit; many other nationalities need an eTA applied for online before boarding, and some need a visa, so check the Government of Canada website if you are not a US passport holder. Permanent residents of the US travelling on a green card should also check the current eTA rule for their nationality.

Canada asks about food, cash over a declared threshold, and cannabis, which may not cross the border in either direction even though it is legal in both Ontario and New York. Children travelling with one parent may be asked for a consent letter from the other.

Time zones

Toronto and New York are both on Eastern Time and change clocks on the same dates, so there is no time difference and no jet lag. The only adjustment is to the clock on your return, when the preclearance queue eats more time than the flight.

What travellers on this route get wrong

The most common mistake is treating this like a domestic shuttle. It is international: you need a passport, check-in closes earlier, and on the way back you must clear US preclearance at Pearson before boarding, which needs a two-hour buffer. The second is ignoring LaGuardia, Newark and Billy Bishop; for a downtown Toronto meeting the Porter flight to the island airport is often the fastest door to door. The third is a winter booking with no slack on either end.

Travel tips

  • Treat Toronto as an international trip

Bring your passport, expect check-in to close earlier than for a domestic flight, and plan two hours at JFK. On the way back, US preclearance at Pearson adds its own queue before you reach the gate, so two hours there is the minimum.

  • Compare all three New York airports

JFK, LaGuardia and Newark all have Toronto nonstops, and Porter's Newark flight lands at Billy Bishop a few minutes from downtown Toronto. For a downtown meeting, that island airport often beats Pearson door to door.

  • Fill in the Advance Declaration

The optional ArriveCAN Advance Declaration lets you answer the customs questions up to 72 hours before arrival and use the faster kiosk lane at Pearson. It takes a few minutes and saves more than that at busy times.

  • Take the UP Express downtown

The train from Terminal 1 to Union Station runs every 15 minutes and takes about 25 minutes regardless of traffic. Tap a credit card at the platform; no ticket purchase needed. From Terminal 3 take the free Terminal Link train to Terminal 1 first.

  • Build slack into winter trips

Snow at Pearson or a nor'easter at JFK can wipe out a day of flights between December and March. For a fixed-date event, fly in the day before, and book a flight with later alternatives the same day in case of cancellation.

  • Leave cannabis at home

It is legal in both New York and Ontario, but carrying it across the border in either direction is a federal offence in both countries. Border officers do ask, and the penalties are not worth it.
