Route Overview
One airline flies it nonstop
Emirates is the only airline that flies nonstop from Los Angeles to Dubai, as of recent schedules, and it has done so for many years with a daily wide-body service. It is one of the longest flights out of LAX, and for most travellers it is the obvious choice: one aircraft, one security line, and a connection bank in Dubai that reaches most of India, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
If the nonstop is full or you prefer to break the trip, the one-stop options are:
- Qatar Airways via Doha. Los Angeles to Doha nonstop, then a one-hour hop to Dubai.
- Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. Nonstop to Istanbul, then about four hours to Dubai.
- Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, British Airways via London or Air France via Paris, each adding a European layover with a six-to-seven-hour second leg.
A one-stop can be a few hours longer than the nonstop in total, so it mainly makes sense when the Emirates fare is high or when you want a stopover.
Flight time and distance
Dubai is roughly 8,340 miles from Los Angeles, about 13,400 km. The nonstop takes about 15.5 to 16.5 hours eastbound, routing north over Canada and Greenland and down across Europe. The return is longer, typically 16 to 17 hours, because of the headwinds.
The eastbound flight leaves Los Angeles in the afternoon or evening and lands in Dubai in the evening of the following day, local time; you lose a calendar day on the way out and regain it on the return, which typically lands in Los Angeles in the early afternoon of the day it left. Count the dates carefully when booking hotels.
Leaving from LAX
Emirates departs from the Tom Bradley International Terminal, usually written TBIT or Terminal B. If you are connecting from a domestic flight on another airline, the terminals at LAX are linked airside by walkways and shuttles but it can be a long walk, so allow time. Check-in for Emirates opens several hours before departure and closes about an hour before.
TBIT security is slowest in the afternoon and early-evening wave when many long-haul flights leave together. Arriving three hours before departure is sensible, especially with checked bags. The LAX-it lot handles rideshare and taxi pickups, the FlyAway bus runs from Union Station and Van Nuys, and the airport's rail connection has been expanding, so check its current status if you plan to use it.
Arriving at Dubai International
Emirates flights arrive at Terminal 3, which is dedicated to Emirates and its partner flydubai. Immigration uses e-gates for many nationalities and staffed counters for first-time visitors; the process is usually quick, though a large arrival bank can mean a 20-to-40-minute wait. Baggage halls are efficient and the exit leads straight to the Metro, taxis and ride-hailing pickups.
Getting into the city:
- Dubai Metro Red Line has stations at Terminals 1 and 3 and runs along Sheikh Zayed Road past Downtown, Business Bay and the Marina. Buy a Nol card at the station. Downtown is about 20 minutes away; the Marina is 45 minutes or more.
- Taxis are plentiful, metered and reliable, taking 15 to 25 minutes to Downtown and 30 to 45 minutes to the Marina or Palm Jumeirah outside rush hour.
- Ride-hailing through Careem or Uber works from marked pickup zones.
If you are continuing to Abu Dhabi, Emirates has run a coach service, and the drive is roughly 90 minutes.
Entry requirements
As of recent rules, US passport holders receive a visa on arrival in the UAE for short tourist stays, with no advance application. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Rules change, so confirm with the UAE government portal or embassy before booking, and check separately if you hold another passport.
The UAE is strict about medicines. Several common US prescriptions and some over-the-counter products, including certain painkillers, sleep aids and stimulant medications, are controlled or banned, and products containing CBD are illegal. Check the Ministry of Health's rules for anything you carry and bring the prescription.
When to fly and when to book
November through March is Dubai's high season: warm days, pleasant evenings and the Dubai Shopping Festival from December into January. Christmas and New Year, when the city's fireworks draw visitors from everywhere, are the most expensive dates to fly from Los Angeles, followed by the spring school breaks. April and October are hot but workable and noticeably cheaper.
June through September is extremely hot and humid, with daily life moving indoors and the beaches empty by mid-morning. Fares and hotel rates are at their lowest then, and the malls, indoor attractions and air-conditioned everything still work. Ramadan shifts earlier each year and quiets daytime dining; check the dates against your plans. For a winter trip, book three to five months ahead.
Time difference and jet lag
Dubai is 11 hours ahead of Los Angeles during Pacific Daylight Time and 12 hours ahead in winter; the UAE does not change its clocks. That is close to a full day-night flip, so jet lag is heavy in both directions. The eastbound flight lands in the evening, which helps: go to bed at a normal local hour and you often wake close to adjusted. The return lands in the early afternoon after a very long day, and most people need three or four days to settle.
What travellers from Los Angeles get wrong
The first mistake is miscounting the calendar day lost on the way out and booking the Dubai hotel from the wrong night. The second is packing medicines without checking the UAE rules; the penalties are serious. The third is booking a tight onward connection in Dubai after a 16-hour flight; Terminal 3 is large and a late inbound can mean a long walk at speed. Give yourself at least two hours.

Travel tips
Check UAE medicine rules before packing
Several common US medicines and all CBD products are controlled or banned in the UAE, with serious penalties. Look up the current Ministry of Health list for anything you take, carry the prescription, and leave doubtful items at home.
Count the lost day
You leave Los Angeles on one date and land in Dubai in the evening of the next. Write the arrival date down before booking the first hotel night, and remember you get the day back on the return.
Buy a Nol card at DXB
The Red Line station is attached to Terminal 3. A Nol card works on the Metro, trams, buses and water buses, and tapping through beats buying single tickets each time.
Allow two hours in Dubai
Terminal 3 is very long and a late inbound from Los Angeles can leave you walking fast to a far gate. If you are continuing to India, Africa or Asia, a connection of two hours or more keeps the day calm.
Pick your season by purpose
Beach and outdoor plans want November to March and higher fares. Shopping, indoor attractions and the lowest prices point to summer, when you move between air-conditioned spaces and the heat barely touches you.
Take FlyAway or rail to LAX
Afternoon traffic to LAX is unpredictable. The FlyAway bus from Union Station or Van Nuys and the airport's rail connection avoid the worst of it, and the Tom Bradley terminal is a short walk from the drop-off.
