Route Overview

One stop is the best you can do from Tampa

There is no nonstop flight from Tampa to Mumbai, and no airline flies Tampa to India at all. The question is where to connect. As of recent schedules, the one-stop itineraries are:

  • Via Newark on United. United flies Newark to Mumbai nonstop, and Tampa to Newark is a frequent domestic leg. This is the most direct way to do the trip on a single airline.
  • Via Frankfurt on Lufthansa and Discover Airlines. Discover, Lufthansa's leisure arm, flies Tampa to Frankfurt, and Lufthansa continues to Mumbai. The Frankfurt connection is usually comfortable and the total time is competitive with Newark.
  • Via London on British Airways. British Airways serves Tampa from London Gatwick, while its Mumbai flights leave from Heathrow. Switching airports in London adds a couple of hours and a coach or train ride, so this only makes sense if the fare is clearly better.
  • Via Zurich on Edelweiss and Swiss. Edelweiss flies Tampa to Zurich, and Swiss flies on to Mumbai. A less obvious routing that sometimes has seats when the others are full.

The Gulf carriers, Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha, do not fly to Tampa, so with them the trip has two stops: Tampa to a US gateway such as Orlando, Miami, Atlanta or Dallas, then the long haul to the Gulf, then a short flight to Mumbai. Air India flies to Mumbai from Newark and New York, reached from Tampa on a separate or codeshare domestic leg.

Flight time and distance

Tampa to Mumbai is about 8,400 miles (roughly 13,500 km) in a straight line. Via Newark, the Mumbai sector alone takes around 14 to 15 hours, and the total trip is typically 18 to 21 hours. Via Frankfurt or Zurich, plan on 19 to 23 hours. Two-stop Gulf itineraries usually come in at 24 to 30 hours.

The return is similar or slightly longer in the air on the westbound long haul, and most itineraries land you back in Tampa in the evening. Mumbai departures for Europe and the US tend to leave in the small hours of the morning, which means a late-night check-in on the way home.

Departing from Tampa International

Tampa International has a main terminal with check-in and baggage claim, and four airsides reached by short automated shuttles that run every couple of minutes. Security is at the airside entrances, after you have taken the shuttle, so the walk from check-in to the gate is longer than the compact look of the airport suggests. The airport is well run and rarely has the long lines of the big hubs, but allow two and a half to three hours for an international departure on Discover, Edelweiss or British Airways, and two hours for a domestic first leg on United.

There is no train to TPA. Rideshare and taxis reach downtown Tampa in about 15 to 20 minutes and St. Petersburg in 30 to 40 minutes. The SkyConnect train links the terminal to the rental car centre and the economy parking garage, and the economy garage is the sensible choice for a two or three week trip.

Arriving at Mumbai

International flights arrive at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International, a large, modern terminal. Immigration can be slow when several overnight flights from Europe and the Gulf land together before dawn, so an arrival that avoids that cluster saves time. E-visa holders use a separate line, and having a printed copy of your e-visa approval along with your hotel address speeds things up. Domestic connections use Terminal 1, a separate building a shuttle ride away, so allow at least three hours if you are flying on within India.

The airport sits inside the city in Andheri, which sounds convenient but means traffic rather than distance decides your journey time. South Mumbai, where Colaba and the Gateway of India are, can take 60 to 90 minutes by road in the daytime and under an hour late at night. Bandra and Juhu are much closer. The options:

  • Prepaid taxi: the counter in the arrivals hall sets a fixed fare by zone, and you pay before you leave. The simplest choice for a first visit.
  • Uber or Ola: both pick up from signed zones outside the terminal and are widely used.
  • Metro: Mumbai's metro network has been expanding, and the Aqua Line now serves the airport area with onward links into the city. Check the current status, because new sections open in stages.
  • Hotel car: many hotels offer airport pick-up, which is worth it for a night-time arrival.

When to fly to Mumbai

November to February is the best weather of the year in Mumbai: warm, dry and relatively comfortable. It is also the peak for both tourism and visits to family, so fares from Tampa are highest around Diwali, which falls in October or November, and over Christmas and New Year. March to May is hot and humid. The monsoon arrives in early June and lasts into September, bringing heavy rain, flooded roads and occasional flight disruption; it is also when fares are lowest.

If you are travelling for a wedding or a family event, dates are fixed and the advice is simply to book early, since the Newark and Frankfurt connections sell out for December. For a flexible trip, late February and early March, or the first half of October before Diwali, give good weather without the peak.

Visas, documents and health

US passport holders need a visa to enter India. Most tourists use the e-visa, applied for online a few days to a few weeks before travel, with options for short and multi-year validity. Rules on eligible airports, fees and processing times change, so apply through the official Indian government e-visa portal and avoid lookalike sites. Your passport should be valid for at least six months with two blank pages.

No vaccinations are required for entry from the US, but a travel clinic will typically suggest hepatitis A and typhoid cover, and you should carry any regular medication in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription. Drink bottled or filtered water and be cautious with ice for the first few days.

Time difference and jet lag

Mumbai is on Indian Standard Time all year, which is 10.5 hours ahead of Tampa in the US winter and 9.5 hours ahead during Eastern Daylight Time. The half-hour offset catches people out when setting alarms.

Eastbound is the harder direction. Most itineraries land in Mumbai in the late evening or the middle of the night, which is helpful: get to the hotel, sleep, and start on local time. Expect three or four days of early waking. The return tends to feel easier because you arrive in Tampa in the evening after a long day of flying.

What travellers on this route get wrong

The most common mistake is leaving the e-visa to the last week and finding processing has slowed, or applying through an unofficial site. The second is booking a Gatwick to Heathrow connection in London without realising it means changing airports with luggage. The third is underestimating Mumbai traffic and scheduling a South Mumbai meeting a couple of hours after landing in Andheri. Treat the ride into the city as its own leg of the trip.

Travel tips

  • Apply early for the official e-visa

Processing times vary and lookalike websites charge extra for nothing. Use the Indian government's e-visa portal, apply at least two weeks ahead, and print the approval along with your hotel address for the immigration desk.

  • Avoid a London airport change

British Airways serves Tampa from Gatwick but flies Mumbai from Heathrow. The transfer between them takes hours and involves your luggage. The Newark and Frankfurt connections are simpler and usually no slower overall.

  • Use a late-night arrival well

Most flights land in Mumbai late in the evening or overnight, when the roads are quiet and immigration is quick outside the pre-dawn rush. Book a hotel pick-up or use the prepaid taxi counter, go to bed, and start on local time the next morning.

  • Allow three hours connecting in Mumbai

Domestic flights use Terminal 1, a separate building a shuttle ride from the international Terminal 2. Immigration, baggage, the shuttle and a second security check add up, so do not book a tight onward flight.

  • Use the Tampa economy garage

The SkyConnect train links the economy parking garage to the main terminal in a few minutes. For a two or three week trip it is the cheapest on-airport option, and the ride is quicker than the shuttle buses at many airports.

  • Pack for heat and the monsoon

Mumbai is warm all year and very humid from March to October. If you travel between June and September, bring quick-drying clothes and footwear that can get wet, and build slack into any plans that depend on road travel.
